Strike UPDATE:

After a protracted meeting, the Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU ABU Chapter, couldn’t come to a consensus on whether the strike should continue or be called off.

In a chat with some of the Lecturers that attended the meeting we gathered that, most of the Junior Lecturers supported that the Union calls of the Strike while the bulk of Senior Lecturers at the Meeting felt otherwise.

In a heated debate, different views were expressed as to whether the Federal Government had met the demands of the union or not.

Also on the burner, was the issue of the Threat of Sack by the Information minister, were members expressed shock to the news of the sack of the entire Academic staff of the Federal University of Technology Owerri FUTO.

A member of the Union from the Department of Political Sciences, suggested that the Union should not take any decision that will make them seem weak and afraid of the Information minister’s threat.

Prayers were then offered for the repose of the soul of Prof. Friday Iyayi and that of Mr. Sunday Audu the late Secretary of the Union in ABU.

The meeting ended in a bit of uncertainty, as member could not foster a way out of the bottle neck there were in, but speaking to a few Lecturers we gathered that the ABU chapter of the Union will still tow the same line with the national body amidst the recent set back suffered by the Union with the resumption of Academic Activities in UNIBEN.

Bottom Line: ABU is still on Strike until ASUU (the National body) calls off.
